How can you survive in a world where you always must be performative, and extremely efficient? During a stressful week, I turned onto a good dose of TEDTalks to help me easing up. These are two new speeches for when you feel bottled up!
The daily practise that could rewire your brain
In this TEDTalk by Timm Chiusano, the main thesis is that in a such performative world, we need to create some brief moments of appreciation. This practice is often already carried on by our brain as a coping mechanism– for example when we are threw off by the most random stuff during moments of extreme stress. On the other hand, if it’s something that someone struggle with, we can learn how to do it by ourselves at more appropriate moments.
Appreciation vs. Gratitude
Chiusano stresses the difference between appreciation and gratitude. The first one comes from cherishing the little things about life; while, the second one is a sense of thankfulness triggered by receiving something (such as a gift, a thoughtful action). It’s more effective to exsercise our brains to look for elements to be thankful for, practising appreciation everyday. It isn’t just a cheesy way of living, it actually helps us becoming more gentle with ourselves, and noticing the little things that make up our lives.
Comparison is the thief of happiness
Timm became really influencial throught sharing appreciation posts and phrases online, while his life chenged completely. He isn’t only happier but he’s able to live in the moment: be mindful. He’s aware of the environment in which he lives, his limtations but also about the ways in which he can improve.
The thrill of not knowing all the answers
The speaker’s main claim is that to feel happier we should try to cultivate what gives us the a thrill. But what could that be? Any field that we are passionate in digging deeper into, but also something that we habve no clue about. Following the speaker’ storytelling, she used to post on the internet videos about scientific facts, the field in what she got her degree about. Initially, she had a narrow audience, until she travelled to Mexico and felt mesmerized in front of its architecture. She shared a video about her journey and got thousands of shares and views.
Maybe the key is to cultivate your curiosity
Talking in jargon to an audience, unless is made up by professionals, could be conterproductive. Touching the emotional side, talking about topics that move people, is key for giving a succesful speech. Life isn’t always about performing and that’s way this piece of advice should be translated into our life: finda an hobby, start from the basis, choose something that touches your soul. This is the way to feel more serene and at ease: knowing that you are always growing and learning new things, everyday.
