A reflective review of Blaga Dimitrova’s Journey to Oneself, exploring its lyrical language, meditative narrative voice, and the search for identity.
The author’s unique tone
Poet, writer, literary critic, translator, and Vice President of Bulgaria from 1992 to 1993, Blaga Dimitrova was one of the most significant figures in twentieth-century Bulgarian literature.
Every word Blaga Dimitrova utters in her work is an outpouring of her soul; every personification, comparison, or even the most innocuous epithet is a surgically precise incision into reality.
A piece of herself is woven into everything she writes, and her characters, who under her pen become real human beings—with dreams, ambitions and fears—are a vivid reflection of her deep emotionality and understanding of life.

If for the average person the world is straightforward, rational and black and white, for Blaga it is multi-layered, colourful, and forever childishly captivating. Her work is proof of just that—how the ever-fleeting, ever-evaporating images of everyday life that have made a distant impression on us, etched into our subconscious but forgotten the next moment, can be captured so quickly and skillfully, how they can be grasped and described in words, reminding us of the intimacy of detail and the joys in small things.
Her work explores profound existential questions about human existence, loneliness, life, and death, while simultaneously placing strong emphasis on the female experience, including motherhood, love, and the inner emotional world of women. A central theme therefore is the journey toward self-knowledge and personal identity, often portrayed through characters seeking to understand themselves and their place in the world.
The book
Journey to Oneself challenges us to reflect on our own path through that of Raina – a tough, independent, and spirited 20 year old woman, who sacrifices the two best years of her life—her student years—to build communism in a youth building brigade in the Rhodopes (mountain range spanning southern Bulgaria and northeastern Greece) as one of the men. Why? To erase the stain on her family name through hard work, to earn the right to a dignified future in years when every blemish on one’s record carries danger, instability, hatred, and sometimes… even death.

Blaga Dimitrova’s novel stands out as one of the most remarkable works of Bulgarian prose from the 1960s. It is a story of departure and escape, a search for personal identity, where experiences unfold as memories and the narrative itself becomes a meditation on the nature of time. In this work, Blaga Dimitrova guides readers along the most intricate and demanding path toward self-discovery—a path that winds through life’s challenges, restless thoughts, and emotional currents.
Only deep traces signify a truly lived life. And even the most magical moment seems not to have existed if it has left no trace, no evidence of its truth. Otherwise, how is it different from a dream? The memory of sweet moments is bitter if that memory has not materialized into something alive, lasting, independent. And even the most wonderful love does not bring joy if it does not give birth to a child’s smile, a bold deed, or at least a song.
Journey to Oneself by Blaga Dimitrova
As Blaga Dimitrova reminds us, the journey to oneself is a slow unfurling in which you learn who you are, what your heart longs for and what is truly worth fighting for. At such a high price it is not an easy process – growth requires confronting parts of yourself in solitude. In its loneliest moments, when love and certainty fall silent, the path turns inward and asks us to face ourselves without disguise. The award is a reflection of the soul in its purest form, in which we can hover as if over infinity – one lesson at a time.

I looked inside myself and the world spun around me, as if I were leaning over infinity.

My relationship with the book
From the very first pages, the book captivated me with the strength of its character, drawing me in completely and urging me to savour every detail, as though its essence were meant to remain with me forever. Every experience of the main character and every new paragraph felt intimately familiar, almost as if the story had quietly taken pieces from my own life.
It felt as though the book understood and gave voice to the pain and complexity of growing up, demanding to be gently held and seen. In every way, my experiences were intertwined with Raina’s. And so, I could see myself as if in a mirror—carefully examining my reflection and following the story’s dénouement, stealing some ready-made advice.
Escape is not salvation. Escape is not a path. It is a step backward and stagnation. Staying true to your inner direction is the hardest thing in this world. Let thunder crash down on your head! There is nowhere to escape from your path and from yourself.
Journey to Oneself by Blaga Dimitrova
The dynamics of Blaga’s expression are capable of engulfing the reader in a shared, sensory, emotional experience, where the identity of the main character imperceptibly becomes their own. I find it incredibly beautiful how you can lose yourself in this labyrinth of feelings, thoughts, and emotional torments of an imaginary person and find so much of yourself in them.
Another thing that mesmerised me was Blaga’s ability to capture life’s fleeting instants with delicate accuracy. The objects, emotions, and soft whispers of each moment seemed to leap from the page, as if the book were breathing them directly into my hands.
The most striking thing, forever lingering in my mind, is her gift for storytelling. Her metaphors take the abstract and the existential and make them understandable, using the beauty of everyday moments to illuminate what might otherwise feel out of reach.

Why read it?
Journey to Oneself is a stirring revelation at the heart of life and self. Every page resonates with emotion, memory, and the truths we often feel but rarely name. I recommend this book to every young person who is just beginning to grapple with the turbulent years of adulthood and seeks a shelter amid their journey. Similarly, for anyone who dares to ask the deepest questions of life, this book is a powerful guide. It urges us to seek what truly belongs to us, to fight for our own path, and not to drift through a life meant for someone else. Its themes remain timeless and deeply relevant.
